I ran across an interesting article in my local paper the other day titled, “The Book and the Boy Don’t Often Mix“. I found this interesting because my twenty eight year old son has always been a reluctant reader. When he does read, it tends to be a sci-fi or humorous book, much in the vein of Dave Barry. The article pointed out that boys tend to be practical readers reading more manuals and magazines. It made me think of the time I presented my nephew with a signed, first edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Months later, I asked my sister-in-law how he liked the booked, she replied, ” Oh, he still hasn’t read it, but he does like to carry it around in his back pack to impress the girls in his class.” The article goes on to explain that for a book to engage a male reader it must have a male protagonist and tackle issues like: being a man, walking away from fights, playing sports and going to war. To read the entire article and for a list of recommended books for that reluctant reader in your life be it a son or grandson… go to http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/336617_reading24.html.
