This is the story of a young Canadian man, John MacLennan, who against his parents wishes, leaves his university life behind to find adventure aboard a merchant schooner headed to Siberia in the early 1900s. The book opens with John having both hands blown off while checking explosives meant to free the ship from the fast approaching winter ice. Think Shackleton meets Into the Wild.
