This is a novel that will sneak up on you. Do yourself a favor and read the edited version of the French edition’s preface that appears at the end of the book first. It is a mini biography of the author and the circumstances that she and her family lived under as a Jew in occupied France before she was arrested and taken to Auschwitz where she died. It sets the stage for the story you are about to read.
