This was my book club’s pick for the month of February and it reminded me a lot of ‘Suite Francaise’ in that it puts a very human face to the horrific events of the Holocaust. It’s the true story of Polish zookeepers in Warsaw and how they used their bombed out zoo as a refuge for those escaping the Nazis as well as a sanctuary for shell shocked domestic and exotic animals. Written with a poet’s touch (each bomb had its own scent) and a naturalist’s eye (flocks of bullfinches, red crossbills, and waxwings began streaming south…passing overhead in squadron V-formations) this is one war time story you will not soon forget. A must read for anyone traveling to Poland.
