Consider this one for your book club. It’s about a Tutsi boy, Jean Patrick, whose dream it is to run track in the Olympics. We follow him and his family during the 10 years that lead up to the genocidal war in Rwanda. Well researched, well written.

From a Washington Post review (because I can’t say it any better), “To say that Nicolle Wallace’s “Eighteen Acres” is one of the best novels I’ve read about life in the White House may be faint praise — there haven’t been many good ones — but her book is both an enjoyable read and a serious look at what high-level political pressures do to people. The novel will be talked about not only because its author served as White House communications director for George W. Bush but also because her three main characters are women: the president, her chief of staff and a television correspondent who is having an affair with the president’s husband.”

Whether you are a bridge player or not, you will find this YA novel an enjoyable read. Teenager Alton Richards is given the summer task of driving his blind uncle four times a week to play bridge and be his cardturner. The book is full of Sachar’s wry humor and obvious love of the game.

This is a fascinating account of the epic battle between Ford and Ferrari in the 1960s for the sportcar racing championship at the 24 hours of Le Mans. All of the characters are there and larger than life, including Henry Ford II, Enzo Ferrari, Carroll Shelby, John Surtees, Phil Hill, Mario Andretti, Bruce McLaren and Ken Miles to name a few. You probably think you know who won at Le Mans in 1966 but this book will tell you who really won and why. The pages turn quickly and easily. Would make a great movie or series. Recommended.

I doubt I would have read this other than it was chosen by my book club. I’m glad they did. The author does a wonderful job of mixing the science and human drama behind the story of HeLa cells. What could easily have been a very dry read was instead a wonderful adventure story of one black family’s search to uncover the truth behind their mother’s death to cervical cancer.

Chosen by my book club, I admit to being a bit intimidated by the book’s abundant classic prose. I had the good fortune of having the audio and print version at my disposal. Listening was a great way to sort out the characters and establish the plot line. Soon I was reading at break neck speed. Give this one a try. It was a sensation in its day and considered to be the among the first mysteries ever printed. A rare gem!

Put yourself in this woman’s place. Each morning you wake up and find yourself sleeping next to a complete stranger. You are reminded each day by a phone call from a doctor you don’t remember to read your journal, the one and only connection you have with the past. This taut paced amnesia driven mystery will keep you reading well into the night.

I read this when it was first published in 2001 and loved it then. The reason I’m reviewing it now is because of the Lara Logan controversy (mother of small children should not put themselves in dangerous situations). I highly recommend especially for a book club read. Lot’s to discuss regarding the double standard that is still present in today’s media.
