I stuck with this one, just because I kept thinking I would learn to ‘come to care about the characters’ as the book blurbs on the back page. Not so. In fact, I had to read a book review AFTER reading the entire thing, just to understand what it was that I had read. Too much work for too little and I wanted to like this book.

“1 small boat, 2 average lovers, and a woman’s search for the meaning of wife.” That is the basis for this excellent memoir, written by a Seattle gal. I laughed out loud reading this book, but yet it was very insightful about the difficulties of making a (new) marriage work. It sounds like it is a sailing book… but you absolutely don’t have to love sailing to love this book. Need more? Then go to the authors web site:

Quirky I like and Aimee Bender’s The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake certainly fills that bill. This is a strange little fable like story about Rose Edelstein, her family and how Rose copes with a sudden ability to taste people’s emotions in the food they fix. Not a good thing as we come to find out, especially when you are only nine years old. Add to the plot mix a brother that tends to disappear; then stir in a father who refuses to step inside a hospital; now, pour in one very lonely mother. What you have is a recipe for dysfunction. If you happen to be a fan of Alice Hoffman and the surrealism that weaves through her stories, give this one a try.

Helen Adams,a young photographer, makes her way to Viet Nam in 1965 in hopes of finding out what happened to her brother. Along the way, she lands a full time job with LIFE magazine. Based on the life of Dickey Chapelle, this novel will haunt you. A beautifully written page turner.

The third book of The Hunger Games trilogy, Katniss has survived two horrific Hunger Games, and now finds the Capitol blaming her for the unrest around Panem.
And I just really love that this is way bigger than just a love story. I love that for a main female character.

Second in The Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire picks up right where The Hunger Games left off.
If you were intrigued by the first, this is a great following piece that strengthens characters and digs into the physiological aftermath of such a horrific war-like event.

I steered away from this book for a bit since it is a Young Adult novel. I’m so glad I finally came around: The book tells the story of teens forced to fight in the ‘Hunger Games’–a gruesome to-the-death game that leaves only one remaining. It centers around 16 year-old Katniss Everdeen who volunteers in the place of her younger sister.
I saw so many themes in this book circling around world poverty (and developed countries place within this struggle), independence, and emotions surrounding war. Plus, any book with a strong female lead gets a plus in my book. I think it’s a great read for any age.

I read this author’s first two books In ‘The Woods’ and ‘The Likeness’ so I’m a fan. This one didn’t disappoint. If you like smart detective stories set in Ireland, I highly recommend.

This reads like the history channel. A truly exhaustive look at the life and times of Cleopatra. Not an easy read but the fascinating details kept me interested.

A historical novel set in America during WWI. It follows a story of 17-year-old Frieda as she is swept up in the government’s fight against venereal disease. Should have been an interesting glimpse into history..but I just couldn’t engage with the main character.
